The 39th Meeting of the Board of Governors attracted hundreds of Members of the Board and their guests from Israel and abroad who attended the plenary sessions, committee meetings and special events organized by the University. The very successful and impressive events were orchestrated by Vice President for External Relations and Resource Development, Amos Gaver, along with Executive Director, Rachel Kaverman, and their staff. Canadian delegates were: Dr. Michael Dan, Michael W. Davis and his wife, Eleanor, Arthur Dodek M.D., and his son, Prof. Adam Dodek, Saul Shulman Q.C., and his wife, Thelma, Hetty and Michael Shapiro, and Michael Meyer. Mr. Leon H. Charney was re-elected as Chairman of the University’s Board of Governors at the Opening Plenary Session. Following this session, a festive inauguration ceremony was held to dedicate the new Younes and Soraya Nazarian Library wing. The first evening event focused on the University’s international pursuits, directed by Vice Rector Prof. Batia Laufer, who presented the University’s new international programs. On the second evening, hundreds of guests filled the Haifa International Congress Center, where Honorary Doctorates and the University’s Outstanding Leadership Award were presented. The Outstanding Leadership Award was presented to industrialist Stef Wertheimer, recognizing his longstanding contribution to the economy, society and security of the State of Israel. Degrees of Doctor of Philosophy, Honoris Causa, were conferred upon: Baroness Ariane de Rothschild The evening concluded with a special tribute to the Police, Rescue and Firefighting Services, Magen David Adom, and Prison Services. The University of Haifa acknowledged their courage and tireless work during last year’s devastating fire on Mount Carmel. The University of Haifa campus served as central command for all services during the fire. Dr. Uzi Landau, Israel’s Minister of National Infrastructure, addressed the Concluding Plenary Session. “The University of Haifa and the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research institute are drawing up a program for the development of Israel’s energy infrastructures. They are Israel’s spearhead in this area”, Minister Landau said. The 39th Meeting of the Board of Governors concluded with a special visit to the Druze village of Julis. Members of the Board of Governors and guests were hosted to a wonderful dinner at the home of the Druze community’s spiritual leader, Shaykh Mowafak Tarif. This entertaining and unique evening marked the special relationship between the University of Haifa and the Druze community.
